Certainly True
People long for something certain and true in their lives. We believe God sent and planted the Church of the Good Shepherd to help people discover that center for their lives, which only comes from God.
The sound of our preaching is distinctive, because it begins with the sheer gift of grace and draws its every breath from the cross of Jesus Christ. Here’s how that sounds.
“God loves sinners! You qualify!”
Both statements are astonishing! First, most people believe that God will only love you if you are good. Yet the Word of God says that he only saves and loves sinners!
Certainty of faith comes about through a person learning to establish everything upon Christ alone, the cross alone, grace alone, faith alone, the Word alone. (Each of these “alones” signifies, in its own way, one fact: that you have hit bedrock at last—God Himself—a very solid place indeed for all foundations!)
Intimacy
People also long for intimacy—with God, and with one another. But that only happens where safety, and trust, and love exist. And this is what God's grace produces. The Church of the Good Shepherd seeks to be that safe place. We offer spiritual enquiry into God’s Word, through weekly Bible studies. Additionally, we encourage every member to join a small group dedicated to personal spiritual growth and accountability. Herefriends can become family. Together we discover the sure and certain hope founded upon the work which Jesus Christ has finished for us.
Small Groups
Small groups are groups of members (usually up to 5) who meet weekly for purposes of spiritual accountability and encouragment. Worship alone cannot provide for all the intimacy needs of God's children.
Kids
Each worship includes a puppet skit based on the lessons for the day. Children are encouraged to “help” the singing by using any of a number of rhythm instruments, which they can pick up as they come in. In addition, we have a wonderful nursery and cry room for the littlest ones.
Music
Our church has a sanctuary in which music of all kinds sounds just fabulous! Additionally, we have a nine foot concert grand piano, perfect for concerts. We seek to share these gifts with the community by seeking to be a recognized musical performance venue. The University faculty have held recitals here; so have choral groups such as the "The Shoals Camerata". “Flutes and Friends” and the "Shoals Concert Band" have both performed here. Last year's Handy Festival featured three groups during the week long celebration. The congregation is pretty musically talented, too!
